Our Take on the 2018 Ohio Bioscience Expo & Showcase

October 10, 2018

Three of our Kaleidoscope Innovation staff recently connected with other professionals, students and job-seekers at BioOhio’s 2018 Ohio Bioscience Expo and Showcase.

Vice President of Research and Development, Medical Mike Clem, DVM, MS; Business Development Manager Matt Suits; and Staff Engineer Daniel Hutchins, PE all represented Kaleidoscope Innovation at the event, hosting a booth and speaking with attendees.

This year’s conference took place in Columbus, Ohio at COSI. The purpose of the annual event is to provide a venue for people to meet established and start-up bioscience companies, suppliers, service providers and innovators in Ohio’s bioscience field.

Our Thoughts on the Event

BioOhio’s annual expo enables both exhibitors and attendees to “connect with new customers, find new collaborators and partners, find colleagues in the industry, and discover companies making cutting edge products.”

Clem shared that “BioOhio is a great organization helping to connect Ohio bioscience companies and resources in the region.”

Our staff also felt that COSI was a terrific host location and setting, particularly considering that it is an organization known for excellence in research, science and innovation. Further, being in Columbus, it provided a central location for bioscience companies, suppliers, service providers and innovators in Ohio to come together and learn about one another.

With students attending the conference as well, the event provided them with an opportunity to interact with industry experts. (Kaleidoscope has a long history of caring about innovation education for students, and has volunteered for events ranging from leading innovation day activities with the Forest Hills School District to bringing our custom VR experience to Pi Day and Maker Faire events. We also highly value our co-ops and are eager to meet talented students within the industry fields of study.)

Suits shared that the experience enabled us to stay on top of the trends and new practices within the medical device development and manufacturing industries.

Our staff also noted that the event showcased the innovation and ingenuity taking place within the Ohio region. Additionally, it allowed Kaleidoscope to engage with the community – as well as with players in the biosciences industry – under one roof.

“Ohio has been home to Kaleidoscope Innovation for almost 30 years,” said Suits. “It started off in the dorm room at the Cleveland Institute of Art and now has transformed into a global insights, design and development firm. Having a champion for the biosciences segment like BioOhio will continue to bolster the region for success and growth. We have enjoyed being a part of this tightknit community as we continue to grow as a company.”

About the Kaleidoscope Innovation Attendees

Mke Clem, DVM, MS, Vice President of Research & Development, Medical

Mike thrives at the juncture of medical technology and clinical understanding. From his training as a veterinary surgeon through more than 20 years with Johnson& Johnson, Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Ethicon and Cordis, he has developed innovative solutions to complex customer problems.

Matt Suits, Business Development Manager

Matt has always loved interacting with clients to find solutions for their challenges. He was drawn to business development at Kaleidoscope Innovation because of the great potential he saw. After graduating from the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati, he worked with two startups, a marketing consultancy, a financial services company and the non-profit 3CDC.

Daniel Hutchens, PE, Staff Engineer

While Daniel has always had a passion for creative design, his desire to develop inventive solutions to problems is what convinced him to abandon his pursuit of an art degree and instead obtain a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Kentucky. A licensed professional engineer, Daniel has worked as a hardware design engineer for Lexmark International and later as a designer and team leader of research & development at LSI Industries.
